The greatest challenge in the widespread use of cold storage is their high cost. Most cold storage units use refrigeration systems for cooling. Refrigeration systems have high energy requirements. For off-grid cold stores powered using solar panels, this translates into the use of a large number of solar panels. This further increases the upfront cost of these units.
Temperate Technologies has developed a low-energy consumption cooling system. Our system consumes only 20% of the energy of a refrigeration system. It uses indirect evaporation and cools to close to the dew point temperature of the ambient.
During the pre-monsoon summer months, when the ambient temperatures in many parts of the country exceed 45 °C and the need for cold storage is the highest, the dew point temperature can be as low as 10 °C.
