In India, nearly 145 Million farmers having agricultural landholding of around 159 Million Hectares, averaging 1.08 Hectares of land per farmer. While India is always considered as Agriculture dependent economy where agriculture sectors have a major contribution to the country's GDP.
In the last few decades, it is getting changed due to industrialization and climate impacts.
As published in the paper named "Water and Agriculture in India, Background paper for the South Asia expert panel during the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA) 2017 by Vibha Dhawan", more than 42% of cultivable land in India come under drought-affected or low availability of water region. That means nearly 50% of farmers are living in such regions.
On the other hand, we also know that more than 70% of the population of India is still living in rural areas, and among them, more than 90% of the rural population still solely dependent on agriculture as their only source of livelihood.
With the above statics, we can say that more than 60% of farmers are facing the problem of water and struggling to earn their livelihood with agriculture only due to limited water. Considering the technology revolution in agriculture especially in irrigation technology, consumption of water in the agriculture sector is highest at 78%. In the coming year with many challenges of climate change and exponential growth in population, decreasing in agriculture land, water for agriculture going to be one of the major issues that may lead our country to depend on others to meet our food requirement.

Impact
The impact of the problem stated above can be severe considering our demand for food for our growing population and the climatic issue we are facing in-country. For those farmers who are totally dependent on agriculture as their only source of livelihood, losing a certain amount of yield due to any cause lead their family to stay hungry for months. In such scenarios, if they are losing the agriculture yield due to less water, they might be leaving agriculture and moving out of the rural areas to find other options of earnings.
